Back in 1973, the band took a trip back to it's roots; the Island of Föhr. Föhr, one of the Frisian islands, is the second largest North Sea island of Germany. During a bus tour of the island the band stopped at several villages. When we stopped in the village of Oevenum, the band had a photo session in a quaint park. As we posed for photos in our uniforms with instruments in hand, a group of local people gathered and persuaded the band to play a few songs for them. (never a difficult task, by the way...)
Across the street from the park where this impromptu concert took place was a Wirtschaft (a pub). When the proprietor heard the music, he came across the street with a bottle of schnaps and some (but not quite enough) glasses. This began a tradition in the brass section: using your mouthpiece as a shot glass.
Hans Peter Ganzel (photo above) shows that tuba players tend to get the better end of this deal! Prost!
